The Lottery

So in my SOC class this morning we discussed some of the inequalities about education in some of my classmates and my own high school back home. The crazy thing about it all is that some of the kids in that class had never known that these types of issues existed and its just crazy how I’d experienced the best of both worlds. But one thing that brought up this post was a movie that was mentioned in class called “The Lottery”. Its about four families and them trying to get their kids in one of the two Harlem Success Academy charter schools and their time on the waiting list to get in. But they had to go through a lottery stage in which all these kids got a chance to be picked to attend the school or not. Out of the four families one the kids got chosen and the other three had to go to their original designated public schools which wasnt doing much for in the first place. The movie got me thinking that its nuts how people can have nothing and hope for so much more, the stats they brought up in the movie shocked me. One thing that stood out to me was a story one of the interviewees told about companies building prisons. She said that they look at the failure rate of minority males as early as fourth grade in order to predict how many jail cells they should build to be ready to house those individuals now that shits nuts. Thats why Im saying lets help build our future yall and not give up on them. Take care of your kids and put them in the right position to be successful. Sorry for the rant but that was just “On My Mind”…

One of my favorite inanimate objects is a picture of my grandfather, the lat Mr. Ned Odum a man who taught me so much and gave me his all as a teacher, role model, and hero…
